How to make a Henna when you have curly brittle thin Hair
First things to know :
- Some will say you need to separate your hair into several sections, you need to use grips etc. Forget about it. If you have curly/brittle/thin hair you will only damage them more. Which would be stupid for the henna thing is supposed to be a care. But to seperate hair means combing and then straightening your hair. Each time I've tried this method, I was hearing hair locks cracking (aargh), getting a load of hair locks remaining in my hands etc. Curly hair, even once "straighten" remains naughty curly hair. Each lock will try to make a knot with itself, to get tangled up, to mix with the others, so really, just forget about it.
-Some others will say you need gloves... I don't know but with the henna I use (Shiraz), once it's all on my head, I just wash my hands and they are clean. Not a big deal. So, unless you really can't touch the henna mixture because it repulses you, you don't need gloves. Why am I saying so ? Because I can't feel things with gloves, and it's even harder to well apply the henna on the right place if you can't feel your hair.
Preparation :
-I mix about 100-120g of neutral henna (the one that doesn't color hair) with about 30g-40g of natural henna (the one that colors in red). The point is not to color my hair but to take care of it. But I must admit I like having red highlights, that why I'm using both kind of henna. As my hair is already strawberry blond I don't need to add much to accentuate my highlitghts. NB : I have very thin hair, that's why only 150g of henna is enough for me. But for normal hair (shoulder length or a bit longer like me) use 300g of henna (total).
-I put the kettle on with about 500ml of water, I won't use it all. Once the water is hot but not boiling, I mix the henna with a bit of water, not too much, the paste is still compact.
-Then I had 50ml of lemon juice and 50ml of orange juice.
-I add 1 teaspoon of jojoba oil and the same of aloe vera gelly.
-I mix and only then, if needed, add some more water so that the paste is less compact but still not liquid.
Some times, I may add cinnamon, but this time I had none so... Some other times, I use a yogourt and neither oil, nor gelly.
I let the paste rest for 1-2 hours.
Application :
So, that's the funny part. I take my comb or fingers and roughly disentangle my hair, to pretend to have one section on the left side, and one on the right side but that's just prentending. Then I take my preparation and go in the bathroom.
Two solutions : You can apply your henna bending down over the bathtub. I did that once, my back still hates me for that. So now, I put the bowl in the sink and put away anything that could suffer from the henna attacks. I wear an old ugly shirt not to be freezing. Then, I take the paste in my hands and put it on my hair, with no real method. One lock, one layer of henna, one lock one layer of henna etc. I try to make some massages to help the henna go anywhere, down to the scalp. With the paste remaining I put some more on the locks.
Next time, I will try a more elaborate method to see if it's better.
Then, I put a plastic mobcap on my head, and clean off hairline, ears, nape of my neck, hands etc. I wrap my mobcap in a towel (to keep it warm).
Waiting and rinsing :
I will have to wait for half an hour to 2 hours. Some take a nap, others will go knitting. I use that time to do some instances (on World of Warcraft), I do three short, or a long one and a short one, it's the perfect timing !
Then I rinse my hair, using some conditioner. And it's done !
